What is Classical Medicine?

The term Classical Medicine is the herbal formulas used in the era B.C. which include all the formulas mentioned in the Shang Han Lun (伤寒论) Treatise on Cold Damage, and Jin Gui Yao Lue (金匮要略) Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet written by Zhang Zhong jing 200 B.C.

Besides including these formulas, Classical Medicine also refers to a classical medical philosophy and understanding of health and diseases with the Eight Guiding Principles and Six Layer of Disease. These classical formulas are best understood and clinically used under this classical understanding. Unfortunately, with the test of time and with the many changes in the education system of the last 40 years in China, the understanding of these classics have been rerouted and joined with other theories that do not correspond to it; by doing so slowly diluting the deeper understanding of these basic classical formulas and medical practice.

In the recent 10 years, some masters and teachers have tried to revive the interest in the understanding of these medical classics and have set out on a quest to spread the correct clinical application of these simple and effective formulas.
