These burners are for the burning of moxa to allow smoke and heat to transfer to the body.
Handmade, wheel-thrown Moxa burning pots made using selected quality clays and glazed beautifully using a wide range of glazes on their own, and in combination.
These burners were first made as an alternative to the wooden moxa roll burners in order to burn moxa wool and smokeless moxa cones as well as moxa rolls. They come in 2 basic shapes.
The first is a flat top recessed circle, where the burning moxa sits well above the base when placed on the body. It provides a nice warmth, allowing smoke to settle above the body when moxa is burned and is suitable for use over most areas of the body.
The second is a deep sitting well which places the burning moxa much closer to the base and is more suited to flat areas of the body such as the lower back. Since the burning moxa sits closer to the body, if placed on areas such as the buttocks, there is a greater chance that the base of the well can come in contact with the body and cause burns.
Dimensions (approx.):
These Moxipots come in three standard sizes:
• Diameter 10cm, Height 10cm (body/lid height 5cm each)
• Diameter 8cm, Height 7cm
• Diameter 11.5cm, Height 10cm
Thickness of the walls is approximately 5mm. Thinner walls mean the lid and walls can get too hot.
They can also be made in custom sizes, however, price and turnaround time will vary.
2 Heat resistant silicone bands are provided for securing the lid in use.
Due to the intricacy of techniques used in production, each burner takes approximately 2 weeks to produce from throwing to final glaze firing.
General Ceramics Care
• Oven, dishwasher and microwave-safe. hand-washing handmade stoneware is recommended in general.
• All glazes are food safe (lead-free).
• As with all ceramic cook-dinnerware, please avoid subjecting the pieces to extreme thermal shock. Sudden transfer from hot to cold temperatures and vice versa can cause damage (cracking) to the piece.
• Ceramic pieces will get hot when heated or if containing just boiled liquids (especially the ones made with black clay) so they must be handled with care.
• Since all Moxipots are handmade, no two items are exactly alike.
Use
For safety, the following is recommended:
• Should be used only under direction or supervision from a qualified practitioner
• Since Moxipots can get extremely hot, especially after extended use in a single session, they should be handled very carefully. Care should be taken handling the burner and the handles should be used.
• There is a chance that ash may fall through the holes. It is advised the practitioner monitors use and does not leave patients unattended. Covering skin with a thin fabric will reduce chances of burns if ash drops through.
• Not for use on the face, sensitive skin and sensitive body parts
• Not for use during pregnancy, or on people with an inability to sense heat or pain
• If the heat becomes uncomfortable, remove from area immediately
• Use in well ventilated areas
• Do not leave in one place for extended periods of time
• Do not fall asleep whilst using the device on yourself!
• The user/purchaser accepts full responsibility for any accidents caused by improper use of the burner
• Keep out of reach of children
